Summer Color has arrived in the Gardens

Summer Color Photo As the azaleas, dogwood, camellia, and rhododendron have faded from their spring glory, the garden beds have filled with summer interest. Gone are the iris and fading quickly are the New Dawn roses. But, in their place, the impatiens, ferns, hosta, astilbe, coral bells, caladiums, day lilies, and other assorted perennials and annuals are basking in summer's warm weather. The hydrangea are beginning their bright blue blooms and, even the oak leaf hydrangea are sporting their white blooms. Mike's herbs are doing well and his tomatoes are relishing their spot in the sun next to the garage. He expects his first tomato harvest later this month. We added Stepables in the stone patio in the east garden. We only tried a few, but if they do well, we'll add even more.

Baby Birds have Flown the Nest

Photo of a mourning dove

Photo of a catbird
The William Miller House gardens were the home to several nesting birds this spring. Just outside our office window, a Mama mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) hatched two chicks, nursed them along, taught them to fly, and they have moved on. In the west garden in the large yew, another family of mourning doves made a home. The youngsters are still around entertaining us with their antics. Catbirds nested in the abelia beside the driveway. They were the source of the dive bombs Nuggett mentions in his blog. Every time Nuggett followed us to the garden for herbs, the Mom and Dad birds would screech at him and dive bomb him to keep him away from their young. Since Nuggett rarely looks up, he wasn't really bothered by their dive bombing. But, Nuggett was really concerned when they started after Sandi. After all, she couldn't have known any better. Even in the city, we have nature in all its glory.

August 10 Carytown Watermelon Festival! Water Melon

Recipe of the month:

Avocado CrispoAvocado Cristo with Cherry Tomato Jam and Balsamic reduction

Ingredients:

8 eggs, lightly beaten
4 ounces milk
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon cumin
Salt and pepper
1 loaf sourdough bread cut in 1/2-inch slices
2 avocados, peeled and sliced
6 ounces Monterey Jack

Plum Tomato Jam

1 pound cherry tomatoes, chopped
2 ounces sugar

Balsamic Reduction

6 ounces aged balsamic vinegar

1 tablespoon lime juice
1 bunch cilantro, chopped
1 avocado, peeled and sliced

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. In a medium size bowl combine the eggs, milk, garlic, cumin, and salt and pepper, and lightly beat. Dip the bread slices in the egg mixture covering both sides. In a baking dish lightly coated with olive oil, place a layer of bread slices on the bottom. Arrange a layer of avocado slices in a fan design on top of the bread. Cover with a layer of Monterey Jack. Place another layer of the dipped bread slices over the cheese and avocados. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes, or until bread is nicely browned.
  3. To make the tomato jam, saute the tomatoes and sugar in a pan until liquid reduces and becomes thick.
  4. In a medium size pot, reduce the vinegar until slightly thickened.
  5. To serve, remove the avocado cristo from baking dish and cut into wedges. Arrange wedges on each plate with the plum tomato jam and a drizzle of the balsamic reduction. Garnish plate with lime juice, chopped cilantro, and a slice of avocado.
